About Clitoral Reconstruction Surgery

Our patients who seek CRS also undergo pre-operative health screening and examination to ensure they are candidates for surgical intervention.

The technique of Clitoral Reconstruction Surgery (CRS) used by our team in Kenya is a modified version of Foldès method and typically takes about 45 min - 1hr to complete.
This modified Foldès technique involves:

  1. Incision through the skin overlying the clitoral remnant/stump.

  2. Dissection and mobilization of the remaining available clitoral tissue

  3. Suturing/anchoring of the reconstructed clitoris outward and downward to the surrounding skin to allow for proper anatomic projection and improved sensation. Concomitant reconstructive surgery (e.g. removal of scar tissue, defibulation, removal of epidermal cysts) is done if necessary.

Patients go home within hours of surgery, and are able to return to work the next day.  Full recovery to normal activity, including exercise, heavy lifting and sexual activity can resume after 6 weeks, depending on postoperative healing.

After surgery, psychosexual consultations and group therapy are offered to all women receiving surgery. Postoperative care kits are provided that include vibrators to aid in bringing back bloodflow and sensation to the vulva, vaseline and squirt bottles for incision care, pads to help cushion the vulva during healing, and journals to help document their recovery process from a medical and psychological standpoint.
